Example: one unit, different booking paths
One traveller finds an apartment on Expedia and completes the reservation there. Another uses the property’s own website. The bookings have different sources, but both stays need the same operational attention to calendar dates, arrivals and communication. The business needs to retain the source of each reservation so that the agreed conditions can be handled correctly.
Its role in distribution
A property can reach travellers who do not already know its name or website. It also appears alongside other options the traveller is comparing for the same destination and dates. An OTA listing is therefore a sales route that needs accurate information, bookable dates and consistent management. Simply being listed does not guarantee that reservations will follow.
The platform and property have different roles
The property supplies the accommodation and delivers the stay. The OTA supplies a search and booking route under its own terms. Commission, payment arrangements, cancellation handling and available tools vary by agreement. Before comparing revenue across channels, distinguish the reservation amount from distribution charges and the obligations attached to that booking; a larger headline amount does not settle the comparison.
An OTA is not your operating system
A platform account mainly shows activity belonging to that channel. It should not be assumed to contain every phone, direct and other online reservation. Price comparison services may also send travellers elsewhere to complete a purchase. To identify the actual booking source, check where the reservation was completed and which confirmation was issued.
