How it works
With a web API, one system sends a structured request and receives a response. That response may contain data, confirmation or information about an error. The implementation determines access, available operations and failure handling. A working integration also needs correct mapping, so that a room identifier in one system refers to the same room in the other.
An integration example
In a hypothetical property, the operator changes an apartment's rate for a weekend. A supported integration sends the change to the selected channel. Verification concerns the correct apartment, rate plan and dates, followed by the resulting state on the channel. Successfully sending a request is not enough to conclude that every subsequent processing step has completed. The resulting channel state is part of checking the connection.
Why it matters
The practical value lies in the task the connection supports: a reservation reaches the management system, or a price change reaches the appropriate channel. The word API alone does not describe that outcome. You need to know which information is connected and which system controls each kind of change.
Common misunderstanding
An API does not imply that all data is exchanged, that communication runs in both directions or that every partner has identical capabilities. It also does not prove a direct or native connection between products. Evaluate the documented scope of the particular integration you intend to use.
